Poker terms explained

There are really hundreds of terms in poker, but it’s enough if you just know the main terms. I’ll bring out the terms in alphabetical order.

All-In

This is when someone puts all his money into the game. You can’t do that in limit tables but you can call ALL-In in no limit tables.

Big Blind

There are always two blinds in the game (before any cards are dealt). This big blind is a full first bet.

Blind

This is also the initial bet, which is being put into the game before any cards are dealt. This is sort of a forced bet – to even play the game, you need to put a blind in the game.

Buy-In
In case you’re interested in playing tournaments, this is the amount that you need to pay to take part of it. Usually it is brought out by two different numbers in a form of $x + $y. So if entering a tournament costs $5+$.50, the participation fee is $5.50. The first part of the amount goes into prize the second goes to the casino.

Call
You agree to bet on the same amount of money as the previous player has put into the game.

Check
This means that you are betting for the same amount as you previously bet to. You don’t give any money in addition.

Flop
These are the first three community cards that are put on the table face up. They are put on the table all at once.

Muck Cards
You don’t want to show your cards to others when the game is finished. So if you won and you bluffed, nobody will know that.

No-Limit
In no-limit game you can bet for any amount of money of your choice. No limits.

Pot-Limit
In pot-limit game the maximum bet you can make is the amount of chips that are currently already on the table.

Pot Odds
That’s a way to calculate whether it’s useful for you to play or not. Pot odd equals the amount of money in the pot compared to the amount you must add to the pot to continue playing. For example, if the pot is $26, someone before you bets $2, then it costs $2 for you also to call the amount. Pot odds in this case are 13:1. If you have a chance of getting the best hand with the next card and this chance is better than 13:1, then it’s good idea to call and continue playing. If your chance of getting the best cards is less than that then it’s not that profitable anymore.

Rake

This is the amount of money that goes to casino from every pot.

Rebuy
Some tournaments offer you the option to get back into the game after you have lost all your chips. Now you can rebuy yourself into the game. Usually it costs the same as the first buy-in was. Note that very often there’s no rebuy option in tournaments.

That’s all. Should you want to know about any other poker terms, leave a comment about it.
